Health Sciences IT (HSIT) Updates
NEW YSPH FACULTY ANALYTICS:The Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) FLEX report brings together historical and current workforce data to support faculty development insights, planning, analytics, and population-level reporting across YSPH. Through the partnership of Teresa Hartnett, YSPH Director of Financial Strategy and Administration, and Graham Stout, Software Engineer 3 with Health Sciences IT, the team developed a clear and engaging report that makes workforce data more accessible and actionable for YSPH leadership.
MED ONE (MED1) FILE SHARING DECOMMISSIONING:Yale School of Medicine (YSM) is decommissioning the MED1 storage volume, an older file-sharing location originally created in the late 1990s and moved to Yale Information Technology Services in 2015. Share owners should review their MED1 content and move needed files to an appropriate alternative storage location. For details on recommended storage options and next steps, visit the
MED1 file share decommissioning FAQ.
HEALTH SCIENCES AI REVIEW GROUP (HSARG): HSARG officially launched as a new cross-functional review body for the Yale health sciences community. Co-chaired by Wies Rafi, Kathleen Ludewig, and Subha Srikumar, HSARG was established to provide consultation and review of AI initiatives and AI-enabled software used for research, education, and administrative purposes across Health Sciences.
The group supports responsible AI adoption by aligning requests with Yale’s AI safety and ethics guidance, Yale Information Security data classifications
, and YSM software governance procedures. The inaugural kickoff meeting was held on June 29, 2026, bringing together representatives from Yale School of Medicine, Nursing, Public Health, Yale Health, and Health Sciences IT to review the group’s charter, operating model, software purchasing guidance, and the current landscape of AI requests.
HSARG serves as the designated review body for non-clinical AI requests, helping ensure that AI projects are reviewed consistently, routed appropriately based on risk, and supported by the right subject matter experts before adoption. Clinical and clinical research AI tools and anything requiring Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) review are out of scope and routed accordingly to the YNHHS Digital/AI Implementation Advisory (DAIAD) Committee.
More information on all other groups of the central AI Governance committees at the University can be found here: AI Review Framework AI at Yale.
DIY CITIZEN DEVELOPER WORKSHOP INSPIRES AI-POWERED PROBLEM SOLVING FOR EDUCATION: The Yale School of Medicine Educational Technology & Innovation (YSM ETI) team recently hosted its first Citizen Developer Workshop, empowering faculty and staff with no coding experience to build practical AI-powered solutions using Yale-approved tools. Participants learned how to create custom chatbots and agents, develop knowledge bases, and explore platforms such as Clarity and
Google NotebookLM. Through hands-on activities and expert guidance, attendees discovered how AI can streamline workflows, enhance teaching and learning, and solve everyday challenges while maintaining Yale's privacy and security standards.
TSS TOUR OF THE YALE QUANTUM INSTITUTE:
Technology Support Services (TSS) recently toured the Yale Quantum Institute to learn more about Yale’s work in quantum science and technology. The visit gave TSS team members a closer look at research facilities supporting advances in quantum computing, secure communications, advanced materials, and sensing technologies. The tour highlighted how Yale’s research community is exploring emerging technologies that may shape the future of computing, data security, and scientific discovery.
Congratulations to Duncan Moore, who received the Yale Surgery Citizenship Helping Hand Award from the YSM Department of Surgery
. Over the past two years, Duncan has gone above and beyond in providing exceptional technical support to faculty and staff. His professionalism, technical expertise, and customer service have earned him well-deserved praise. Duncan will also celebrate his 19-year anniversary at Yale on July 16, marking nearly two decades of dedication and service to the university.
EMPLOYEE PROMOTIONS
Congratulations to Leena Kommawar of HSIT Software Solutions and Engineering on her promotion to business systems analyst IV. This achievement recognizes her outstanding contributions, leadership, and the positive impact she has made across HSIT.
Joanne Luce has been promoted to IT project manager IV. As a member of YSM Educational Technology & Innovation (YSM ETI) team, Joanne supports the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Office by managing the MedHub and QGenda systems, overseeing integrations, improving reporting and scheduling processes, and providing user support and training. This promotion recognizes her dedication and valuable contributions to YSM ETI and the GME community.
WELCOME HSIT STAFF
Matthew Kiley recently joined HSIT as our new Information Security Program Manager. He brings experience in cybersecurity governance, risk management, and compliance across healthcare and federal organizations. YSM JOINS INTERNATIONAL AI RESEARCH INITIATIVE FOR PRECISION MEDICINE:Yale School of Medicine is part of an international consortium that has received a €16.9 million Horizon Europe grant to develop AIRIS, an AI-powered platform designed to advance precision medicine
. Led at Yale by Naftali Kaminski, MD, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Professor of Medicine (Pulmonary) at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), the project brings together 21 research and industry partners across North America and Europe to create AI models that integrate clinical, imaging, genomic, and patient data to better understand complex diseases.
Over the next four years, AIRIS will help researchers identify disease mechanisms, discover biomarkers, explore new treatment opportunities, and accelerate personalized medicine research. Yale, the only U.S.-based academic team in the consortium, will play a leading role in research focused on pulmonary fibrosis, liver, cardiovascular, kidney, and inflammatory bowel diseases. The project aims to provide a transparent and explainable AI platform that supports scientists throughout the research process, from data analysis to hypothesis generation and study design.
YSM RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS RECENT ADVANCES IN AI, MEDICINE, AND PATIENT CARE:Yale School of Medicine researchers continue to make significant contributions across a range of fields. Recent studies explored how AI reasoning models make decisions
, identified concerns about the ease of obtaining GLP-1 medications online, and introduced a new method for accurately measuring placental volume. Additional research examined childbirth outcomes for women with prior scoliosis surgery, methods to improve emergency department safety, and the ways bacteria interact with their environments. Researchers also welcomed microbiologist Joseph Mougous, PhD, who recently joined Yale School of Medicine and the Microbial Sciences Institute, whose work focuses on how bacteria defend themselves and compete with other microbes.
NEW DATA RESOURCE SUPPORTS LARGE-SCALE CLINICAL RESEARCH AT YALE:Yale researchers can now access Truveta through the Yale DataMed website, providing access to millions of de-identified EHR records from health systems across the United States. The platform includes longitudinal patient data, linked claims information, and mortality data, all standardized to support research and reduce data preparation efforts. Truveta
Studio also offers tools for cohort building and natural-language querying, making it easier for researchers to conduct exploratory studies, assess cohort feasibility, and leverage large-scale real-world data for clinical research.
