Around the Country, Liman Fellows Work for Democracy
As the upcoming election gives voters the chance to elect representatives and weigh in on proposed legislation, Liman Fellows are among those seeking office and working to protect elections.
Caitlin Mitchell ’12, a 2013 Liman Fellow and an attorney with Johnson Johnson Lucas & Middleton in Eugene, Oregon,represented a nonbinary student suing their school district for gender discrimination. At trial, Mitchell and her client prevailed on every claim, including an Equal Protection claim and a Title IX claim. Oregon Public Broadcasting covered the case.
In Memoriam
Ady Barkan ’10, lawyer, activist, and 2010 Liman Fellow, died on November 1 from complications of ALS at the age of 39. He was a co-founder of Be a Hero and an organizer for the Center of Popular Democracy. Ady used his own battle for healthcare rights to become a leader in the effort to save the Affordable Care Act.
