HSIT XCHANGE WEBINAR ON AI DRAWS OVER 300 PARTICIPANTS: On Sept. 10 HSIT hosted its quarterly xChange forum, open to all health sciences faculty and staff. The webinar focused on new software guidance for Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and a variety of updates to the Yale-approved AI tools and governance. In the software portion, HSIT reviewed three primary ways to search and inquire about available Yale software titles: the Company Portal app on Yale-managed devices, the Yale Software Directory, and submitting
an HSIT Software Inquiry.
A new YSM Software Purchasing and Procedure is in review and expected to be finalized in PolicyTech later this fall. Guest speakers from the Yale IT AI Platforms team discussed the new Claude Enterprise licenses and related features and costs, reviewed new features in Clarity coming the last week of Sept, and the integration options in Portkey. The speakers answered many common questions about software and AI. The
recording and slide deck are available.
TURNING RESEARCH NEEDS INTO TECHNICAL SOLUTIONS WITH HSIT RESEARCH SYSTEMS: The Research Compute Infrastructure (RCI) Systems Engineering team helps researchers transform complex technical and security requirements into practical, scalable IT solutions. A joint team with HSIT and Yale Biomedical Informatics & Computing, RCI works with researchers from planning through launch and ongoing support. The team provides expertise in IT infrastructure, cloud services, security, compliance, and data management.
Recent projects include updating Yale New Haven Health application infrastructure, creating a secure Yale-hosted environment for the PCDD Oral PCA System, moving Harvard’s Project Zebrafish research platform to Yale, and transferring more than one terabyte of microbiome research data for the Mougous Lab. These projects improved security, reliability, capacity, and access to important research resources. Through a collaborative approach, the RCI Systems Engineering team provides the technical foundation researchers need to turn ideas into results.
AMBIENT FEEDBACK TOOL EXPANDS CLINICAL EDUCATION CAPABILITIES: The YSM Educational Technology & Innovation (YSM ETI) team has expanded the ETI Ambient Feedback tool
(Yale Secure Wifi or VPN required) tool beyond its original medical education use cases to support a growing range of clinical education applications. Leveraging integration with a Clarity Health ePHI custom agent via API with the Portkey AI platform, the tool now supports new workflows including One-Minute Preceptor Summaries, Management Reasoning Summaries, and Patient-Centered Communication Feedback.
YSM collaborators are exploring these features for FY27 pilot studies with primary care interns and residents. The team also added Google Analytics to better understand usage and Dynatrace monitoring and alerts to identify and address service disruptions more quickly. Feedback from medical students and classroom use has helped the team make the tool easier for learners and educators to use. A final production release is planned for December 2026, when the tool will become available to all YSM faculty and students.
RESPIRATOR COMPLIANCE SIMPLIFIED IN HEALTH ON TRACK: Yale employees and students who may be exposed to hazardous airborne contaminants must complete respirator training and a personal fit test. This OSHA requirement applies to more than 1,600 faculty and staff and 1,200 students. Thanks to the HSIT Campus Health team, Health On Track
now includes an online respirator medical evaluation questionnaire, replacing the previous PDF upload process. The digital workflow reduces incomplete submissions, speeds up turnaround times, and saves time for users and staff. Student Health and Campus and Occupational Health teams have already responded positively to the faster, easier process.
OCTOBER IS CYBERSECURITY AWARENESS MONTH: Cybersecurity Awareness Month returns this October with Security Unmasked. Hear from experts, including a reporter from The New York Times who investigated online scams. There will be four live virtual events, weekly self-paced puzzles, a phishing simulation challenge, and prizes.
YSM MED STUDENT CREATES ANESTHESIOLOGY AI COACH: Anesthesia Playground is an AI-powered simulation platform that helps medical students learn anesthesiology through realistic operating room scenarios. Developed by fourth-year Yale medical student Chanseo Lee and seven anesthesiology faculty collaborators, the tool creates personalized learning experiences for students completing anesthesiology and surgery clerkships or sub-internships. The simulation includes clinical scenarios, a ventilator, and a virtual operating room stocked with medications and supplies.
VIRAL INVADERS MAKES LEARNING INTERACTIVE: Residents in infectious diseases are learning clinical reasoning while earning points in Viral Invaders, an educational video game that places players in the role of an infectious diseases physician
. Set in a hospital taken over by a technology company determined to automate medical decision-making, the game challenges players to prove the value of human clinical judgment by solving patient cases, puzzles, and escape-room style challenges.
Developed by Joe Canterino, MD, MHS, in the game players navigate hospital floors, unlock clues through diagnostic decisions, and complete interactive activities tied to infectious disease concepts. Designed for short 10-minute sessions, the five-level game combines problem-solving, storytelling, and medical education in an engaging learning experience.
