The Simulation facility leverages advanced simulation technologies, including AI-enabled manikin capable of conversational interaction, standardized patient rooms equipped with integrated camera systems, and dedicated debriefing spaces that rely on secure audiovisual capture for instructional review.
The simulation lab plays a critical role in supporting more than 600 simulations annually for approximately 350 nursing students across multiple academic years, ensuring reliable recording, storage, and retrieval of simulation data. All video recordings are stored in an in-house server environment, supported by IT services and governed by defined privacy and data retention protocols, including student consent and end-of-term deletion policies. In addition, the lab is expanding into immersive learning through virtual reality (VR) technologies, further underscoring the importance of scalable infrastructure, secure data management, and integrated instructional systems in advancing technology-enabled healthcare education.
TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION IN MEDICAL EDUCATION SERIES (TIME SERIES) SHOWCASE AI, XR AT YSM & YSN: Through two recent TIME Series events, the Educational Technology and Innovation (ETI) team highlighted how high-tech initiatives have transitioned from conceptual ideation to active pilot phases. On Jan. 27, faculty and staff from YSM and Cushing Whitney Medical library presented key milestones including the implementation of an in-house ambient AI scribe that uses generative modeling to transcribe and summarize verbal feedback during patient interviews, alongside the use of photogrammetry to create high-fidelity 3D anatomical models for Apple Vision Pro headsets. On Feb. 20, the ETI team hosted a roundtable examining the evolving role of XR and 3D technologies in medical education. The session convened faculty, staff, and institutional partners to explore how immersive technologies are being implemented across departments and programs. Panelists Ray Hill, Travis McCann, Asher Marks, MD, and Lisa Zhang, MD shared examples spanning photogrammetry-based 3D anatomy models, immersive emergency medicine simulations, and VR-supported training initiatives. Speakers emphasized that meaningful impact depends less on hardware and more on thoughtfully designed, pedagogically grounded content aligned with curricular goals. The discussion also addressed practical considerations critical to institutional adoption, including infrastructure reliability, accessibility, psychological safety for learners, and coordination with IT and privacy requirements.
YSPH/YSM ALUMNA BRIDGING THE DIGITAL HEALTH GAP TO COMBAT CHRONIC DISEASE IN AFRICA: By leveraging a sophisticated digital ecosystem, mDoc — a wellness app created by Nneka Mobisson ’04 — is transforming chronic disease management for low-income populations in Nigeria through a multi-layered technology strategy. At the heart of the platform is a wellness app that provides virtual self-care health coaching, utilizing behavioral science and data analytics to drive lifestyle modifications for over 150,000 members. To ensure inclusivity, the company employs an omnichannel approach, supporting basic phones via SMS while utilizing physical "nudge hubs" equipped with Wi-Fi to help smartphone users sync data and overcome local electricity challenges. Most notably, the integration of Kem, an AI health coach, and NaviHealth.ai, a geo-mapped directory of verified healthcare facilities, demonstrates a scalable model where LLMs and digital navigation tools fill critical gaps in overburdened healthcare infrastructures.
AI-POWERED ULTRASOUND IN POINT-OF-CARE DIAGNOSTICS: YSM Cristiana Baloescu, assistant professor of emergency medicine, is exploring how AI can revolutionize point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) by automating complex image acquisition and interpretation. By leveraging AI algorithms to quantify physiological data, such as lung ultrasound imaging, cardiac ejection fraction in the heart, this technology enables non-expert clinicians to capture high-quality diagnostic clips and receive real-time decision support. Beyond the bedside, Baloescu highlights how AI integration optimizes clinical workflows through automated quality assurance, image archival work, and streamlined documentation, ultimately extending sophisticated diagnostic capabilities to triage units and remote emergency transport.
