AWARD Students Receive Excellence in Medical Education Award
Saeed Juggan, MD-PhD '29, and Arielle Shibi Rosen, MD '27, have been recognized with the inaugural Excellence in Medical Education Award. The award celebrates students who enrich the YSM learning experience through exceptional teaching, peer mentorship, and dedicated educational service.
AWARD Breier Earns Cynthia Togawa, MD, NEMG Teaching Award
Richard Breier, MD, Northeast Medical Group (NEMG) Internal Medicine, recently received the first Cynthia Togawa, MD, NEMG Teaching Award, named for an NEMG Internal Medicine physician who passed away last April. Nominations were submitted by students who rotated through NEMG practices.
NEW ROLE DeCarlo Joins YSM as Medical Laboratory Manager
Claire DeCarlo recently joined Yale School of Medicine as the new medical laboratory manager supporting the Office of Curriculum.

NOTABLE Two MD Students Invited to AAMC Leadership Seminar
Graduating MD students Arielle Levine and Bassel Shanab were nominated and invited to attend a prestigious leadership seminar offered by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Students were nominated based on their demonstrated willingness and ability to positively impact the culture and/or learning environment. After a competitive process, AAMC selected Levine and Shanab to attend the “RISE: Developing Future Leaders in Academic Medicine & Science for 4th Year Medical Students” seminar in Salt Lake City, Utah.
UPCOMING You're Invited to Student Research Day on May 5
This year's Lee E. Farr, MD Endowed Lectureship will be given by Huda Zoghbi, professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor College of Medicine.
Students presenting scientific posters at this year’s event will have their abstracts published in a special summer 2026 issue of the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine (YJBM). YJBM is a peer-reviewed journal indexed by PubMed and PubMed Central. YJBM was originally founded as an outlet for the education and professional advancement of Yale medical students, so this collaboration is especially meaningful.
The Master of Health Science (MHS) Class of 2026 will graduate on May 18. The graduating cohort includes three students from the Clinical Informatics & Data Science track, seven from the Clinical Investigation track, four from the Health Services, Policy, and Outcomes track, and nine from the Medical Education track.
The incoming Class of 2028 will begin classes on July 1. The program has accepted 16 internal candidates and continues to review applications.
2026 MD Class Completes Theses
Congratulations to the members of the MD Class of 2026 on completing your thesis! The thesis is a major accomplishment and reflects the time, effort, and intellectual curiosity invested throughout your training. You should take great pride in this meaningful contribution to the medical and scientific community.
Each thesis is also published in EliScholar, Yale University Library’s digital platform for scholarly publishing, where it becomes part of a lasting academic record and is accessible to a global audience.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Fundamentals of Simulation Design and Debriefing
The course, offered by Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation, has spaces open in the following sessions: April 14, April 28, June 9, and June 23. Classes are open to anyone in the Yale New Haven Health and YSM communities. For questions, email cheryl.mayeran@ynhh.org.
The Office of Student Research is accepting applications for the One-Year Research Fellowship and MD-MHS Program. This fully-funded one-year research fellowship affords students the opportunity to do a full year of research while receiving a stipend. The deadline to submit is April 6 at 8 a.m.
PROGRESS REPORT Elentra Launch Update
The next phase of the Elentra learning management system implementation is underway. This phase provides training for MD pre-clerkship and Physician Associate Program administrators ahead of the full launch in August 2026. In parallel, the Office of Student Research will be launching Elentra in phases beginning July 2026 to align with the academic year and ensure a smooth transition. The Educational Technology & Innovation team is grateful to all stakeholders for their support and dedication to this project.
MD COURSE Capstone Course
The MD Class of 2026 began their four-week Capstone Course on March 2, led by Oluwatosin Adeyemo, assistant professor of OBGYN, and Barry J. Wu, professor of medicine. The 107 participating students are engaging in review of high yield medical and surgical knowledge to prepare them for residency. Activities include specialty-specific boot camps, first night on call simulation, point-of-care ultrasound training, and advanced communication skills workshops. Throughout the course, students have been documenting their reflections in journals gifted by the Alumni Association.

YJBM’s upcoming issue on neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration will be published on March 31 via PubMed Central. Plus, YJBM is looking for peer-reviewers. If interested, please add your name to the reviewer database.
