Drs. Yiqun Ma and Kai Chen, and Riena Harker among 2024 YSPH student and faculty award recipients
Congratulations to three members of the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health community, Drs. Yiqun Ma and Kai Chen, and Riena Harker, MPH, who were honored with Yale School of Public Health’s 2024 Student and Faculty Awards.
Dr. Yiqun Ma was awarded the YSPH PhD Research Prize for her publication in Nature Human Behavior titled, “Racial/ethnic disparities in PM2.5-attributable cardiovascular mortality burden in the United States.” Dr. Kai Chen, YCCCH Deputy Faculty Director and Director of Research, was awarded the Distinguished Student Mentoring Award, which recognizes educators who serve as role models for their students and lead the next generation of public health professionals. Riena Harker was awarded the Dean’s Prize for Outstanding MPH Thesis for her
thesis titled, “Effects of Wildfire Smoke and Nonsmoke PM2.5 on Respiratory, Circulatory, and Mental Health in Nevada: A Case-Crossover Study on Emergency Department Visits from 2016-2019."
Yale School of Public Health releases spring magazine: "Focus 2024: A Climate Change Handbook"
The Yale School of Public Health has released its spring magazine, "Focus 2024: A Climate Change Handbook," which places a special emphasis on the critical intersection of climate change and health. This comprehensive handbook aims to educate and inform readers with rigorous scientific insights through a series of essays written by YSPH experts, featuring interdisciplinary collaborations with leaders across campus. Topics include the public health opportunities of climate action, state-level initiatives addressing the climate crisis, and the power of youth in the climate movement, among many others.

YCCCH co-hosts CityXChange convening in Mexico City
Last month, the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health, in collaboration with the Resilient Cities Network, co-hosted the CityXChange meeting in Mexico City. Dr. Jeannette Ickovics, Director of YCCCH’s Program on Climate Change and Urban Health, and Dr. Daniel Carrión, YCCCH’s Director of Education, helped facilitate the meeting. The three-day exchange aimed to address issues at the intersection of climate change, health, and equity through various discussions, workshops, and sessions focused on transforming challenges into actionable solutions. Representatives from cities across eight countries and four Mexican states shared their city-led initiatives to combat climate change and promote public health.
Jennifer Wang discusses the health implications of record-breaking heat
Jennifer Wang, YCCCH’s Executive Director, was quoted in a STAT article discussing the health impacts of extreme heat and policy measures to reduce the burden of heat-related illness. This comes in response to the latest corroborating evidence, from a paper published in Nature, that 2023 was the hottest summer on record in the northern hemisphere over the past 2,000 years. Wang emphasizes that efforts to help people and the planet stay cool are equally vital for human health and wellbeing.
