Choral event at Yale planetarium draws capacity crowd

In the first event of the new semester, a sold-out crowd gathered in in Yale's Leitner Family Observatory and Planetarium for a concert by the Chora Womens Ensemble focusing on the story of the universe. The event was sponsored by the ISM's Religion, Ecology, and Expressive Culture Initiative. View slideshow.

Keynote speakers announced for Black Sacred Arts conference

Dr. Kyrah Malika Daniels (Emory University) and Dr. Jacob K. Olupona (Harvard University) will be the keynote speakers for “Centering the Black Sacred Arts: Research, Education, and Public Life” in May 2025. Learn more and submit a proposal.

James O'Donnell leads Yale Consort in weekly term-time services

Yale Consort, the ISM’s newly formed professional vocal ensemble conducted by Professor James O’Donnell, has embarked on a series of choral services this fall, including Evensong, Vespers, and Sung Eucharist. The weekly services will be held on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. during term-time in various New Haven churches. Read more.

Student spotlight: Kevin Vondrak

Kevin Vondrak D.M.A. Choral Conducting ’29 comes to Yale from Philadelphia where he is associate conductor of The Crossing. He co-produced nine recordings with the ensemble and is winner of the 2023 Grammy Award for best choral performance. Read more.

Preparing for the France Study Trip

In preparation for 2025’s international study trip to France, students traveled to New York City to visit the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, St. Philip’s Church in Harlem, Le Petit Sénégal, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Read more about the upcoming study trip.

Stefan Parkman, the new interim conductor of Yale Schola Cantorum conducted his first concert before an enthusiastic crowd on Sept. 29 with a program of early music by Monteverdi, Buxtehude, Orlando di Lasso, and Schütz. Read more and view video.

The ISM's long-term fellows

Pictured here is the 2024-25 cohort of ISM fellows (minus one) who are now fully immersed in a vast range of research, including acoustics in sacred spaces, Black religion and sexuality, Sephardic religious music, and Medieval mural decoration. Read about the fellows' work.
